If you’ve ever “just popped in” to Aldi for milk and come out with a cart full of candles, plants, and random wrap… yeah. Same.
The trick is making that middle-aisle chaos work for you instead of blowing the budget. Winter is when I stock up on home stuff I’ll use all year: gift wrap, hand creams, little decor pieces, and pet bits that keep the house cozy without the fancy price tag.

These little house candles look way more expensive than seven bucks. You get a ceramic village house jar with a scented candle inside in cozy bakery-adjacent scents like caramel apple & spice, gingerbread & cinnamon, and peppermint & vanilla.
They’re the kind of thing other stores sell as “heirloom houses” or “keepsake jars” for $15-$25 once you add a fragrance name and a ribbon. Pop one on a mantle or bookshelf now, then reuse the house as a little tealight holder or tiny planter once the wax is gone.
Because the jar is enclosed, the scent tends to be softer and more “background” than a big open tumbler candle, which is perfect if strong fragrances give you a headache.
2. Kirkton House LED Novelty Holiday Candles – $6.99
If you’ve got kids, cats, or you just don’t trust yourself not to fall asleep on the couch, the LED pinecone and tree candles are the safer option. These faux candles come in glittered pinecone and tree shapes, in ivory and brown finishes, and they light up with a warm flicker instead of a real flame.
The nerdy bit here is simple physics: real flame gives you light by burning fuel (wax), which also eats oxygen and produces soot particles; LEDs just push electrons through a semiconductor, so you get light without heat or combustion. That means you can tuck these into bookshelves, near curtains, or on kids’ shelves without worrying.
They’re ideal to mix with real candles on a table, use one real candle for scent and a cluster of these for glow.
3. Scentsicles scented ornament sticks – $6.99
If you love the smell of a real tree but have to stick with faux, grab the Scentsicles. Aldi has the classic “O Christmas Tree,” Snowberry Pine, and White Winter Fir this week, all at $6.99.
Elsewhere, these usually run around £6.50-£10.49 per tube (roughly $8-$13) depending on the shop.
They’re just cellulose sticks soaked in fragrance oil. The science is that the volatile fragrance molecules slowly evaporate off the surface, especially with warm air currents from heating or lights. Hang a couple deep inside the branches instead of right on the outside and you’ll get that “walk past and catch a whiff” vibe without people staring at green sticks.
They’re strong, so start with one or two on a small tree or wreath and add more if you need to.
4. 5″ Christmas cactus – $5.99
This is one of my favorite cheap houseplants, holiday or not. Aldi’s 5-inch Christmas cactus in a decorative pot cover is a steal under six dollars.
Similar sized plants often run $12.99-$24.99 at big-box stores and online, especially once you add a cute pot .
Quick nerdy note: these “cacti” are actually forest succulents (Schlumbergera), not desert ones. They like bright, indirect light and slightly moist soil, not the baked-dry treatment you’d give a prickly cactus. If you keep night temperatures a bit cooler (around 60°F/15°C) and give them long dark nights in fall, they’ll rebloom for you every year.
I like these as low-maintenance teacher gifts that don’t die two weeks after winter break.
5. 6″ holiday poinsettias – $4.89
If you want that classic red splash without paying florist prices, Aldi’s 6-inch poinsettias are hard to beat at under five dollars.
Poinsettias are short-day plants, which means they color up those big “petals” (they’re actually bracts) when nights are long and uninterrupted. If you keep them away from bright lamps at night and out of drafts, they’ll hold color much longer.
And yes, they’re mildly irritating if eaten, but they’re not the deadly poison people think they are. Still, if you have nibbly pets, keep them on a high shelf.
6. Holiday kalanchoe – $8.99
Kalanchoe is a great “set it and mostly forget it” holiday plant. Aldi’s versions come in bright colors and look like something you’d pay specialty-garden-center prices for, but they’re under nine bucks.
They’re true succulents, so they store water in those thick leaves. Let the top inch of soil dry out before watering again, and make sure the pot has drainage. If you don’t overwater, these will keep blooming on a sunny windowsill long after the tree is down.
I like grabbing one for myself and one for a neighbor who doesn’t want “another candle.”
7. Lacura 7 Piece Hand Cream Set – $5.29
This is one of those “stash in the gift cupboard” buys. You get seven small tubes of scented hand cream in a giftable box for just over five dollars.
Similar seven-piece sets at other retailers run anywhere from £5.99 for a discount version up to almost £30 for a more “luxury” brand.
Online, people are a bit split: some say they stock up every year for teacher gifts, others find the formula a little light if your hands are really cracked.
I like them for “tiny thank-you” gifts, clip one tube to a gift card or tuck them into stockings. If you want deep repair for working-hands, use these as daytime “smell nice” creams and keep a thicker unscented one by the bed.

And because it’s thicker than dollar-store wrap, you don’t get as many mystery rips when you actually start wrapping.

Big jumbo rolls at other chains can easily run $20+ for fancy licensed prints.
I like using the more neutral prints, stars, trees, simple animals, for non-holiday winter birthdays too. And if you’re being extra thrifty, the plain backs of some prints can be turned inside-out for kid art or packing paper.
11. Merry Moments novelty ribbon – $3.99
This is where you make cheap paper look intentional. The novelty ribbon comes in proper “grown-up” finishes: burgundy, gold metallic, green scallop, holographic silver, ivory snowflake, red satin, red velvet, and twine, all at $3.99.
From a waste point of view, the best thing you can do with ribbon is reuse it. These are sturdy enough to survive being untied and re-tied, unlike the super curly plasticky stuff that shreds. I keep a shoebox of “rescued” ribbon and bows and top up with nicer ones like these when Aldi has them.
