Aphids are the most common reason cabbage leaves curl, but water stress, temperature spikes, and a handful of soil-borne diseases can all produce exactly the same symptom. Treating for the wrong one wastes the rest of your season.
I’m an organic permaculture specialist, and I grow cabbages of all types year-round: red and white for coleslaw, pickles, stir fries, and salads, beautiful pointed summer varieties for their delicate flavor and versatility, and deep green winter savoys for their robust flavor and cold hardiness. They’re absolutely worth the effort, but they’re not the easiest to grow.
A lot of things besides humans like to eat cabbages. Pigeons are a total nightmare, so all my brassicas need to be grown under cover. Then you have grazing animals like deer, some rodents, a lot of insects. And my naughty chickens. They’ll make straight for any unprotected cabbages if they get a chance.
Although I think cabbages are worth every bit of care you give them, they do need you to keep a close eye on them so you can catch problems early. Cabbage leaf curl is one of the earliest signs that something is wrong.

Understanding Cabbage Leaf Curling
Cabbage leaf curl is any distortion of the leaf blade, including upward curling, downward cupping, inward rolling, or spiral twisting, that signals the plant is under stress. The direction and pattern of the curl are your first diagnostic clue.
Leaf curling matters because it is tied directly to the plant’s ability to photosynthesize properly, move water and nutrients, and eventually form a solid head. If you ignore it, you may still get something harvestable, but you are much more likely to end up with tiny heads, loose heads, or no heads at all.
How To Diagnose Cabbage Leaf Curling
Before you dive into spraying, feeding, or ripping plants out, you need to figure out why your cabbages are curling in the first place. Diagnosis is just pattern spotting.
One thing to check before anything else: what variety are you growing? Savoy cabbage and some Asian brassica varieties have naturally crinkled, puckered, or ruffled leaves. If you’re growing a savoy and the leaves are deeply wrinkled but the plant looks vigorous and otherwise healthy, that’s the variety doing what it does, not a problem you need to fix.
Quick Visual Checklist
- Look closely at the leaves, especially the undersides. Do you see any insects, eggs, sticky residue, or sooty mold?
- Look at the pattern of curling. Are the leaves curling up, down, or twisting? Is it only the youngest leaves in the center, or older outer leaves?
- Check leaf color. Are there yellow V-shaped patches at the edges, purpling, mottling, or scorched brown edges?
- Check the soil an inch or two down with your finger. Is it dry, evenly moist, or soggy and waterlogged?
- Think about recent weather. Have you just had a heatwave, a cold snap, days of heavy rain, or strong drying winds?
- If you suspect root problems, sacrifice one struggling plant, lift it carefully, and look at the roots for maggots, swelling, dark streaks, or bad smell.

Common Causes Of Cabbage Leaf Curling
Lots of things can cause cabbage leaves to curl before you get the chance to harvest those big, tasty cabbage heads. The main culprits are:
- Aphids
- Cabbage loopers
- Cabbage root maggots

- Clubroot
- Fusarium wilt
- Cabbage leaf curl virus
- Water stress
- Temperature stress

Pest Infestation
Lots of pests like to feast on cabbages, stealing nutrients from the leaves or stripping them bare. Sap sucking pests are some of the most common and important causes of leaf curl in home gardens.
Aphids

Aphids, also known as plant lice, are tiny insects that can cause significant damage to your cabbages. They come in various colors, including green, black, brown, and even pink, but regardless of their color they are bad news for your garden. Cabbage aphids tend to be green unless they have been feeding on red cabbages, in which case they are usually pink.
One of the tell-tale signs of aphids is the curling and yellowing of leaves, often coupled with a sticky residue known as honeydew. This sweet, sticky substance can attract other insects and can lead to the growth of sooty mold that coats the leaf surface in black. You might also notice small, white shed skins from aphids around your plants, and if the infestation is severe, you will see dense clusters of these pests on your cabbage leaves and in the folds of developing heads.
Aphids are sap-sucking pests. They insert their mouthparts into the leaves of your cabbage plants and extract the sap, which deprives the plant of essential nutrients and water. Their saliva also causes a reaction in the plant tissue, which leads to distorted, curled leaves. Plant leaves wrinkle and curl, eventually cupping, with the youngest tissue usually worst affected. Over time, the affected leaves may turn yellow and drop off. Controlling aphids naturally and managing ants is critical, because ants like to farm aphids for their irresistible honeydew.

Cabbage Loopers
Cabbage loopers are caterpillars known for their distinctive looping movement, which looks like they are doing a little inchworm dance. They are green with a narrow, white stripe along each side and can grow up to 1.5 inches long.
The imported cabbageworm (Pieris rapae) causes identical damage and is at least as common in most US gardens, if not more so. Its adults are the white butterflies you see fluttering around your brassica beds in spring and summer. Every one of those white butterflies you don’t catch is a future caterpillar.
Cabbage loopers and imported cabbageworms are voracious eaters and can defoliate your cabbages if left unchecked. The first sign of an infestation is often irregular, rounded holes in the leaves. You might also notice greenish droppings or the caterpillars themselves on the undersides of leaves.
As these caterpillars munch away on your cabbage leaves, they cause physical damage that leads to curling or cupping of the leaves around the chewed areas as the plant tries to repair itself. In severe cases, this feeding damage can lead to the complete loss of leaves and very poor head formation.
Cabbage Root Maggots
Cabbage root maggots are the larvae of a small fly known as the cabbage root fly. These maggots are white, legless, and about a third of an inch long.
Signs of cabbage root maggot infestation can be tricky to spot because these pests operate underground, targeting the roots of your cabbage plants. Above ground, you might notice wilting, stunting, or yellowing of your cabbage plants, particularly in warm weather. If you gently pull up an affected plant, you will see small white maggots feeding on and tunneling into the roots.
Cabbage root maggots feed on the roots and root hairs, damaging the plant’s plumbing and inhibiting its ability to take up water and nutrients. This stress shows up as curling leaves and wilting, even if the soil looks nicely moist. Severe infestations can kill young plants outright.
The most effective organic prevention is floating row cover placed over transplants at planting time, before the cabbage root fly lays eggs. The adult fly cannot reach the soil to lay if it cannot land near the stem base. Keep it in place until plants are well established, removing it only as needed for weeding.
Whiteflies

Whiteflies are tiny, sap-sucking insects that can cause significant damage to a wide range of plants, including cabbages. They are called whiteflies because of the powdery white wax on their wings and bodies. Despite their name, they are more closely related to aphids and scale insects than to true flies.
Whiteflies are usually found on the undersides of leaves, where they feed on the plant’s sap. Signs of a whitefly infestation include a sticky residue on the leaves known as honeydew, which can lead to the growth of sooty mold. This mold can further stress the plant by blocking sunlight from reaching the leaves.
Another clear sign is the presence of white, powdery insects that fly up in a little cloud when the plant is disturbed.
Whiteflies cause leaf curling in cabbages in two main ways. First, as they feed on the plant’s sap, they inject toxins into the plant, which can cause the leaves to curl, yellow, and become stunted. Second, whiteflies can transmit several plant viruses, including cabbage leaf curl virus. When a virus-carrying whitefly feeds on a cabbage plant, it can infect it and trigger the more severe curling and distortions associated with viral disease.
Controlling whiteflies can be challenging because they reproduce quickly and can use many different host plants. Strategies like encouraging natural predators, using insecticidal soaps or neem oil, companion planting, and keeping plants well fed and watered all help to keep populations in check.
Disease And Fungal Infections

here are quite a few diseases that can cause cabbage leaves to curl as they damage the leaves directly or interfere with water and nutrient transport. Some are spread by pests like aphids and whiteflies, so controlling pest populations and keeping your soil healthy is critical if you want reliable cabbage harvests.
Black Rot
Black rot, caused by the bacterium Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris, is one of the most destructive diseases that can afflict your cabbage plants. It thrives in warm, humid conditions and can spread rapidly through a bed or garden plot.
Signs of black rot
The first signs of black rot usually appear as yellow, V-shaped lesions at the edges of the leaves, with the point of the V pointing towards the center of the leaf. As the disease progresses, these areas darken, become water-soaked, then turn brown or black. You may also notice a foul smell if you cut into severely affected stems.
How black rot causes leaf curling
As black rot attacks the leaf veins and tissue, the affected areas die and contract, which pulls the leaf edges upwards and creates a characteristic upward curling pattern. In severe cases, entire leaves wilt and drop and the plant may eventually die or fail to form a usable head.
Clubroot
Clubroot is a soil-borne disease caused by the pathogen Plasmodiophora brassicae. It affects plants in the brassica family, including cabbage, broccoli, kale, and Brussels sprouts. The pathogen produces resting spores that can survive in the soil for many years, making clubroot particularly tricky to manage once it is established, which is why clubroot management focuses so heavily on prevention and rotation.
Signs of clubroot
Clubroot causes the roots of cabbage plants to become distorted and swollen, resembling clubs or spindly, misshapen knots. Above ground, you will often see wilting, especially during hot, dry weather, even when the soil is moist. Leaves may turn a purplish color and overall growth is stunted.
How clubroot causes leaf curling
Because clubroot deforms the roots, it severely restricts the plant’s ability to take up water and nutrients. This chronic stress results in wilted and curling leaves as the plant struggles to keep up. Over time, plants yellow, collapse, and die. In infected beds, cabbages rarely form proper heads.
Fusarium Wilt

Fusarium wilt is a soil-borne fungal disease caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. conglutinans. It is a common problem in many vegetable crops and can persist in the soil for many years. It is also known as Fusarium yellows of cabbage.
Signs of Fusarium wilt
Symptoms of Fusarium wilt in cabbages include wilting, yellowing, and stunting. Leaves may droop, and the veins on the underside can take on a brownish color. If you cut through the stem of an affected plant, you may see a brown discoloration in the vascular tissue.
How Fusarium wilt causes leaf curling
Fusarium infects and plugs the vascular system of the cabbage plant, disrupting the transport of water and nutrients. This can cause leaves to curl and wilt before they turn yellow and die. Curling and drooping can be early signs before the dramatic whole-plant wilt shows up.
Cabbage Leaf Curl Virus

Cabbage leaf curl virus (CaLCuV) is a disease that can cause significant damage to cabbage plants and other brassicas. It belongs to the geminivirus group, a family of viruses known to infect a broad range of plants. CaLCuV is transmitted by whiteflies.
Signs of CaLCuV
Symptoms of CaLCuV usually begin with upward curling of the leaves, often coupled with yellowing or mosaic mottling on the leaf surface. As the disease progresses, leaves become severely distorted and the whole plant is stunted. Plants may not form heads at all, or they may produce small, deformed heads.
How CaLCuV causes leaf curling
CaLCuV interferes with normal plant development and cell division. The virus alters how cells grow and expand, leading to twisted, curled leaves rather than flat, normal foliage. It also interferes with photosynthesis, which adds to the yellowing and general loss of vigor. Curling and distortion are often among the first visible signs that a plant has been infected.
Because viral diseases cannot be cured, prevention and early removal of infected plants are key. Managing whiteflies is essential if you want to avoid the virus in the first place.
Environmental Stress Factors

Water Stress
Cabbages, like all plants, need the right amount of water to thrive. Both overwatering and underwatering can put significant stress on your plants and lead to leaf curling.
Overwatering
When cabbages are overwatered, their roots can become waterlogged and starved of oxygen. This leads to root damage and rot, which disrupts the plant’s ability to move water and nutrients up to the leaves. The leaves may respond by curling, often inward, as the plant tries to reduce its surface area and slow water loss. You may also see yellowing and limp, floppy foliage.
Underwatering
Underwatering leads to dehydration. When roots cannot keep up with the plant’s demand for water, leaf cells lose turgidity and the leaves droop and curl, usually downwards. This is another way the plant tries to reduce its exposed surface area and conserve water. Consistent, deep watering and a good mulch layer usually solve this type of leaf curl.
Temperature Stress

Cabbages are cool-season crops. They are happiest between about 55°F (13°C) and 75°F (24°C). When temperatures swing below or above this range, your plants can suffer temperature stress that shows up as curling leaves.
Cold stress
Cold snaps and frost can freeze water inside leaf cells and rupture them. Damaged tissue then collapses, curls, and wilts. In severe cases, leaves turn black and die. Young plants and tender varieties are more vulnerable.
Heat stress
Temperatures above 80°F (26°C) are when you typically start to see heat curl. The plant struggles to pull up enough water fast enough to keep pace with evaporation through the leaves, so it rolls and cups them inward to reduce sun exposure and slow water loss. One useful sign: leaves that curl up on a hot afternoon and look normal again by the next morning are almost certainly reacting to heat, not disease. If the curl is gone by morning, consistent watering and mulch are your fix, not treatment. Prolonged heat can also cause loosely formed heads and bolting, where the plant sends up a flower stalk before you ever see a proper cabbage.
Nutrient Deficiencies
Just like humans, plants need a balanced diet to stay healthy. Certain nutrient deficiencies, particularly calcium and boron, are closely linked to distorted, curled growth in brassicas.
Calcium deficiency
Calcium is vital for cell wall strength and new cell growth. When cabbages do not get enough calcium, the newest growth at the tips of the roots and the margins of the leaves becomes distorted. This shows up as curling and cupping of young leaves, with possible tip burn or dieback in more severe cases.
Boron deficiency
Boron supports cell division, sugar transport, and many other plant processes. In cabbages, boron deficiency can cause distorted growth, hollow or cracked stems, browning or rotting in the center of the head, and curling leaves. The heads can be badly affected even if the outer leaves do not look too alarming at first.
Phosphorus deficiency
Phosphorus is key for energy transfer, root development, and overall growth. When cabbages are short on phosphorus, they may grow slowly and take on a dark green or purplish cast. Leaves can curl downwards, and in more serious cases, leaf tips and edges can die back.
Potassium deficiency
Potassium regulates water use, helps with drought resistance, and plays a role in protein synthesis and photosynthesis. Potassium-deficient cabbages often show upward curling along the leaf edges, with yellowing and scorching around the margins. Symptoms typically start on older, lower leaves before moving upwards.
Soil pH And Leaf Curling

Soil pH controls how available different nutrients are to your plants. Cabbages generally prefer soil between about 6.0 and 7.5. For clubroot-prone beds, raising pH above 7.2 with garden lime limits spore germination and is one of the most important practical steps you can take.
If your soil is very acidic or very alkaline, your plants may technically have enough nutrients in the soil, but they cannot access them properly. This leads to deficiencies and stress symptoms like curling leaves, even when you are feeding regularly.
For example, in highly acidic soils, calcium becomes less available, which can mimic calcium deficiency. In more alkaline soils, elements like iron, manganese, and phosphorus can become less available. Extreme pH can also disrupt the soil microbiome that helps plants take up nutrients and resist disease.
Regular soil testing and gentle pH adjustment with lime or sulfur where needed help keep your cabbages in that happy middle ground.
Overfeeding And Excessive Nitrogen

How To Treat Cabbage Leaf Curling
Some problems that cause leaf curling will never reverse on the leaves that are already damaged, but you can stop the damage spreading, protect new growth, and often still get a decent harvest.
In some cases, especially with serious diseases and viruses, your only option is to remove symptomatic plants to protect the rest. With pests and environmental issues, there is usually more you can do.
Pest Control Methods
Controlling pests is not just about stopping leaf curling. It also reduces the risk of disease because many pathogens hitch rides on insects.
Introduce and encourage natural predators
Nature does a lot of pest control for free if you let it. Ladybugs, lacewings, hoverfly larvae, and parasitic wasps are all brilliant predators of aphids, whiteflies, and caterpillars. Encourage them by planting a mix of nectar and pollen-rich flowers near your brassica beds and dial down broad-spectrum sprays that kill everything.
Use insecticidal soap or neem oil
insecticidal soap and neem oil are useful organic tools for managing soft-bodied pests like aphids and whiteflies. Use them according to the label, and take the time to thoroughly spray the undersides of leaves and into the folds of developing heads where pests hide.
Spray in the early morning or evening so the foliage is not wet in baking midday sun, and to minimize disruption to the beneficial insects that will also be working for you.
Use Bt for caterpillar pests
For cabbage loopers, imported cabbageworms, and other caterpillar pests specifically, Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Bt) is the most targeted organic option you have. It kills caterpillars but is harmless to beneficial insects, birds, and humans. Apply Bt spray when you first spot young caterpillars, since it is most effective on small larvae before they have done serious damage. It breaks down quickly in sunlight, so reapply after rain.
Practice crop rotation
Crop rotation is one of the simplest and most powerful tools you have for managing soil-borne pests and diseases. Try to avoid planting cabbages and other brassicas in the same bed more than once every three or four years. This breaks up the life cycles of things like cabbage root maggot and slows the buildup of clubroot spores and Fusarium in your soil.
Use companion planting
Companion planting is about using plant combinations that support each other. For cabbages, that usually means either plant partnerships that confuse or repel pests or plants that attract beneficial predators.
Good companions for cabbages include marigolds to help deter a range of pests and attract beneficial insects, thyme and sage around the edges to confuse moths and loopers and add another layer of scent, nasturtiums to attract aphids away from your cabbages and provide habitat for predators, and dill and other umbellifers to pull in parasitic wasps and hoverflies.
Disease Management
If you are dealing with disease, especially bacterial or viral infections, your options are more limited, but you can still protect the long-term health of your garden.
Remove and destroy affected plants
For serious diseases like black rot, clubroot, Fusarium wilt, or viral infections, it is usually best to remove and destroy the affected plants rather than letting them limp along. Do not compost plants that are clearly diseased. Bag and remove them from the garden, or burn them where that is allowed.
Always clean your tools and boots after working in diseased beds so you are not quietly spreading problems through your plot.
Use disease-resistant varieties and rotate your crops
If you know clubroot or Fusarium are present, look for cabbage varieties with partial resistance and pay extra attention to rotation. Rotating away from brassicas for several years and building soil organic matter are both important when you are dealing with persistent soil-borne problems.
Maintain good garden hygiene
Keep on top of plant debris in and around your cabbage beds. Old leaves and rotting plant material are perfect hiding places for disease spores and fungal pathogens. Clearing them up promptly reduces the reservoir of infection.
Where appropriate, and within your own organic or low-input preferences, you can also use fungicides approved for vegetables to manage specific fungal problems. Always follow the label, and treat this as a support, not a substitute for good cultural practices.
Addressing Environmental Stress

Novice gardeners are not the only ones who find themselves dealing with cabbages suffering from environmental stresses. Soil imbalances, erratic watering, and weird weather can catch anyone out.
Regulate Water Intake
If water stress is contributing to leaf curl, adjusting your watering practices can make an enormous difference. Cabbages need 1 to 2 inches of water per week, applied deeply and at the base rather than sprinkled from above. Deep, infrequent watering encourages roots to grow down in search of moisture rather than concentrating at the surface where they are vulnerable to drought.
Check your soil regularly. It should be moist but not waterlogged. On light soils in hot weather, that might mean watering every two to three days. On heavier soils and in cool weather, once a week is often plenty. Watch the plants as much as you watch the calendar.
A soaker hose is great for providing a slow, steady supply of water while keeping foliage dry, which also helps reduce foliar diseases.
Use Mulch

Mulch is one of your best allies in keeping cabbages happy. A good organic mulch layer around your plants helps retain soil moisture during hot, dry spells, insulate roots against sudden temperature changes, and suppress weeds that compete for water and nutrients.
Materials like compost, well-rotted manure, straw, or shredded leaves all work well. Just keep mulch a little bit away from the stems themselves so you are not inviting rot at the base of the plant.
Ensure Proper Nutrition
Healthy, well-fed cabbages are much more resilient to pests, diseases, and stress. Regular soil testing is ideal, but even without tests, you can move towards a balanced feeding program rather than throwing random fertilizers at problems.
Use a balanced organic fertilizer or a mix of homemade compost and additional amendments where your soil needs them. If you know your soil is low in particular nutrients like calcium or boron, use targeted amendments in moderation and always follow the recommended rates.

How To Correct Overfeeding And Excessive Nitrogen
If you suspect that you have overfed your cabbages or given them too much nitrogen, the first step is simply to stop adding more. Put the blood and bone, fresh manure, or high-nitrogen feeds down for a while.
